state University of soma department of University Extension Soma City Soma Mr. J. E. Calkins. Los Angeles, Cal. Dear
Mr. Calkins: I have yours of October 25th. I am glad you have made the acquaintance of Mr. Muir. I have known him for a
long time but have never met him, although I have letters of introduction to him. He is a genius in his appreciation of mountain
and forest, and has done more for the preservation of the natural beauty of California, not only than any other one man, but
more than all other agencies put together. I should be very glad to meet him and hope to do so perhaps during the next summer
for I am planning to visit the Yosemite and Hetch-hetchy. I had a note from a representative of President Roosevelt in which
I am assured that the letters from this city will be considered when the question at issue comes definitely before the president.
I believe that if the prominent people of California take action in the matter, their sentiment will weigh much more than
that of the scattered forest-lovers of this part of the United States. Happy to hear from you again. I beg to remain, Yours
very sincerely, illegible THOMAS H. MACBRIDE DIRECTOR WILLIAM C. WILCOX SECRETARY 11/4/1907. Dict. L.B.D. 06240
