A photographic portrait of Sydney Rose, Berkeley's second Fire Chief. Rose succeeded James Kenney who died in the line of
duty in 1916. Chief Rose, at age 37, was the youngest fire chief in the country. He instituted the Fire Department's fire
prevention bureau, and lead the fight against the great 1923 Berkeley fire. Rose was later appointed Deputy Fire Marshal
for the state of California. He died of a heart attack at the age of 48 on April 24, 1927.
