Oct 8th 1862. Dear Brother I have just taken into my noddle to write you a few lines, it is an awful rainy time here, bad
for the potatoes, before we heard of the conclusion which you and Father had come to Dav had bought him a yoke of cattle and
had plowed several acres up the hill, but he willingly gave up the land and father paid him for what he had done. he has now
left his farm part to Chaun illegible Hall and part to the boys. he was down at Portage at the examination. while there he
got an offer from Forbes to be clerk. he thought he could do nothing else for a while, and so started down there yesterday
The folks are greatly pleased with their mill. Father wants all his horse blankets and everything washed now. Mother was up
here a few days and had a rainy time. We are glad to hear you are so happy in your home as you call it. I thank you for your
495 funny? candy and pictures. although Dav says he could'nt have got them for A illegible for there was no A illegible then.
She is almost walking she can take two or three steps alone and as mischievous and dirty as ever. I have not seen Sarah since
you left but I suppose she is about the same. little George has been pretty sick but when I last heard was getting better
I have got another new girl but am in hopes this one will stay a while. her name is Jane Sample I think this is all the news.
Be a good boy Keep in the narrow path. Watch and pray lest you fall into temptation. Good bye John write soon. Margt
