South Bowl

Historical Note
This hand drawn and painted aerial rendering is a southwest view overlooking the large South Bowl open space. It was part
of an eight piece set developed to capture the design and planning intentions embodied in UC Merced’s 2009 Long Range Development
Plan.
The image takes the perspective of a viewer sitting on an outside patio of a future Student Union. The viewer can see turf
used for soccer, grasslands adjacent to a lower pond, a storm-water retention facility, and a small dock with kayaks. The
tower in the distance marks the intersection of Lake Road and Bellevue Road. The large wall of buildings rises from the main
campus entrance, Bellevue Road, and depicts the “flat roof” design vision of the campus. Flat roofs, often described in
design meetings as the “fifth façade” were favored in campus plans as they provide the availability for the campus to install
solar panels at a future date. On the right, seating for an open air aquatic center and pool can be seen. This image is
also noteworthy because it shows, in detail, how campus planners and the artist worked to ensure people depicted in the rendering
series reflected the diversity of UC Merced’s campus population.
