Description:
Handwritten letter from Mizuye Hirose to [Afton] Nance. 4614-D Tulelake Center Newel, Calif. Dear Mrs Nance, The troubles we had here has kept me from writing letters
to anyone. It is like trying to study while listening to Henry Adrich. I think you are wondering as the rest of the United
States, how this awful turmoil has started. I notice in this camp when I walked in the hospital (I worked in the hosp. one
day) and Administration that, there was no friendly relationship between the Caucasian and the Japanese workers. I was quite
disturbed by that when I first came here for in Amache most of the Caucasians were friendly to the Japanese workers, joked
around with them and occasionally let them take day off for shopping in Lamar and Granada. They surely weren’t strict with
the working hours. Even when we were leaving for New York, Mr. Lindley, the project director, and his fellow workers all
came in the car and talked with us and then shook hand with all of us before we shoved off. These small friendly gesture
surely made us want to stay there. I am sure we would of stayed in Amache if our name was not on the list to be exchanged.
I guess the kibeis didn’t help much toward harmonizing this camp either. The propaganda we recieved isn’t quite true.
We weren’t going to start any sabotage here and we surely didn’t have guns. All we wanted was fair play in every division.
As for Dr. Pedicord getting bump on the head was nothing compared to the things he has done to the Japanese people in this
center now and before the Segregation. I heard he was nice until his son was killed in action in the Pacific. All we want
now is to continue working as we had in normal times. I imagine we won’t until we are ruled either by the Army or WRA.
Most sincerely Mizuye Hirose
