Administrative History
The Dana Strand Club was a mobile home development on the Dana Point Strand
established in 1956 by the Chandler-Sherman Corporation. The Club grounds included
90 lots overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The site was accessible only by private road
and included a private beach. Club amenities included a restaurant, clubhouse,
tennis court and swimming pool. The club hosted events such as holiday parties and a
polar bear swim, and issued a community newsletter.
Membership in the Club, which was required to rent a lot, was strictly regulated by
Chandler-Sherman Corp. New members had to be sponsored by an existing member and
provide three character references, one of which had to be a financial adviser. The
Club had two membership categories: regular and associate. Regular members leased
home sites at the Dana Strand Club. Associate Members were part of the immediate
family of a regular members in good standing. Associate membership were usually only
issued to unmarried daughters and sons over the age of fifteen.
The Club was initially managed by Rex Thompson who was also vice president of
Chandler-Sherman Corporation. In 1958, Thompson resigned as General Manager, and was
replaced by Caroline and Ogden Read. The Reads managed the club until 1981 and then
Drew G. Harper assumed their responsibilities. The Dana Strand Club officially
closed its doors on February 24, 1989.
