    Biographical/Historical Note

    Bion S. Gregory was a lawyer, businessman and land agent. Born in 1870 in Muscatine, Iowa, Gregory received his A.B. from Pacific Methodist College in 1889. He was admitted to the practice law in 1891, then graduated in 1893 from Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. Moving to Honolulu, Hawaii, Gregory operated the Bion S. Gregory Company, dealing in construction and household supplies, from 1897 to 1904. From 1905 to 1915 Gregory served as a land agent and landowner in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico. After 1915, Gregory lived in San Francisco, where he was known as an authority on mechanic's liens and other legal forms. Gregory died 1938 in San Francisco, California.     Scope and Content of Collection

    The Bion S. Gregory Papers include personal account books, business records, legal records, correspondence, printed materials, maps, photographs, and subject files. Most of the documentation relates to his activities in Mexico. Included are correspondence and legal documents relating to properties in Mexico, particularly the management and retention of his plantation on Majagual [2 cubic feet]. Parcel maps in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, railroad maps [128 items]; photographs dating from 1890-1940. Approximately 300 photographs, including negatives, are of Mexico, others are of family members. Subject files mostly relate to agriculture, politics, religion and sights in Mexico. Calendars date from 1892-1893, 1907-1915, and 1937. Certificates include marriage, fraternal, memorial of son Milton Merle who died during World War II, among others. Printed materials consist of promotional material of various land companies in Mexico.
