    Acquisition Information

Dr. Black's decision to donate this collection grew out of communication, starting in late 2004, between himself and the RNSP Curator, James O'Barr.

    Biography / Administrative History

Dr. Peter Black became involved with the establishment of Redwood National Park while he was an Assistant Professor of Forestry at Humboldt State University (then Humboldt State College) from 1961-1965. Under contract with the National Park Service Dr. Black wrote "Climate, Soils, and Hydrology of the Redwood Region". His involvement with the park continued until its expansion in 1978.

    Scope and Content of Collection

The collection consists of papers authored by Dr. Peter Black, 1960s era scholarly and popular journal articles about redwoods and the creation of a national park, state and federal agency publications, and forest products industry articles and brochures.

    Arrangement

The collection consists of one series and is arranged in this order: Dr. Black's writings, journal and government materials, clippings and brochures. Some of the collection arrived at RNSP in labeled file folders but much was loose material. During processing original file headings were retained as the files were rehoused in archival folders. When the subject matter related directly to the creation of the park and/or the preservation of redwoods the loose materials were filed by the entity that created them. Other loose materials were sorted by major categories. File headings created during processing are enclosed in brackets [ ].
