The collection contains drafts of monographs and articles, as well as the materials gathered
by the authors during their research. The materials in this collection cover the history of
NASA Ames from the early 1940s through to 1998, and include information gathered from
sources such as the Ames "Astrogram," the Center's newsletter; histories of NASA Ames Center
branches; writings and papers by NASA Ames engineers and scientists; and scientific

Acquisition Information
The material in this collection was acquired over time, as the research was conducted and
the documents gathered. The materials were processed as a collection for the first time in
1998 by Helen Rutt.
Scope and Content
The Histories of Ames Research Files collection was established for the purpose of
gathering in one collection the research materials collected by individuals hired by NASA to
write histories of NASA Ames or its research and development activities. The collection
contains drafts of monographs and articles, as well as the materials gathered by the authors
during their research. The materials in this collection cover the history of NASA Ames from
the early 1940s through to 1998, and include information gathered from sources such as the
Ames "Astrogram," the Center's newsletter; histories of NASA Ames Center
branches; writings and papers by NASA Ames engineers and scientists; and scientific
journals.
The collection is arranged in six series and is based on the body of research material
collected by each author. The order of arrangement is by the date in which the material was
collected and used. The series are: Edwin Hartman, which contains drafts of
Adventures in Research (published in 1970) and images found in the
book; Edie Watson, which contains files of information gathered in anticipation of an update
of the Hartman book, which was never undertaken; Elizabeth Muenger, which contains the
research files of Muenger that were gathered to support her monograph
Searching the Horizon, as well as a draft copy of her work; Glenn Bugos, which
contains drafts, layout drafts, and comments on his work,
Atmosphere
of Freedom
; Kristen Edwards, which contains the research files of Edwards for
support of her article "The US-Soviet/Russian Cosmos Biosatellite
Program"; and Karen Dunn-Haley, which contains the subject files and drafts of
papers written by Dunn-Haley on the issues of manpower, the environment, safety, and
external affairs at NASA Ames Research Center.
The folder headings established by the creators of the materials were retained with a very
few exceptions, in which cases the headings were clarified or shortened to better represent
the contents of the files.
