Acquisition Information

The material in this collection was acquired over time, as the research was conducted and the documents gathered. The materials were processed as a collection for the first time in 1998 by Helen Rutt.

Scope and Content

The Histories of Ames Research Files collection was established for the purpose of gathering in one collection the research materials collected by individuals hired by NASA to write histories of NASA Ames or its research and development activities. The collection contains drafts of monographs and articles, as well as the materials gathered by the authors during their research. The materials in this collection cover the history of NASA Ames from the early 1940s through to 1998, and include information gathered from sources such as the Ames "Astrogram," the Center's newsletter; histories of NASA Ames Center branches; writings and papers by NASA Ames engineers and scientists; and scientific journals.
The collection is arranged in six series and is based on the body of research material collected by each author. The order of arrangement is by the date in which the material was collected and used. The series are: Edwin Hartman, which contains drafts of Adventures in Research (published in 1970) and images found in the book; Edie Watson, which contains files of information gathered in anticipation of an update of the Hartman book, which was never undertaken; Elizabeth Muenger, which contains the research files of Muenger that were gathered to support her monograph Searching the Horizon, as well as a draft copy of her work; Glenn Bugos, which contains drafts, layout drafts, and comments on his work, Atmosphere of Freedom ; Kristen Edwards, which contains the research files of Edwards for support of her article "The US-Soviet/Russian Cosmos Biosatellite Program"; and Karen Dunn-Haley, which contains the subject files and drafts of papers written by Dunn-Haley on the issues of manpower, the environment, safety, and external affairs at NASA Ames Research Center.
The folder headings established by the creators of the materials were retained with a very few exceptions, in which cases the headings were clarified or shortened to better represent the contents of the files.

Series I. Edwin Hartman

Physical Description: Boxes 1-3

Series Scope and Content Summary

The first series is the Edwin Hartman series, and contains draft versions of the book Adventures in Research, as well copies of the images used in the book. No research files are found in this series. Hartman's book was published in 1970.
This series is arranged to reflect the layout of the Hartman book, Adventures in Research. Thus the first subseries is "Outline," followed by "Part I," "Part II," and "Part II." Within the subseries, photographs follow typescripts of the chapters of the book. Edwin Hartman's papers are a good source for information such as when various structures were built at NASA Ames, and who some of Ames' earliest scientists, engineers and researchers were, as well as their areas of expertise and the contributions they made to the field of aeronautics and aerospace.

Series II. Edie Watson

Physical Description: Boxes 3-10

Series Scope and Content Summary

The second series, Edie Watson, contains the materials gathered by Watson to update Hartman's book in 1977, a task that was never accomplished. Despite the fact that an update to the Hartman book was never written, Watson's materials were retained as they provide a considerable amount of information, such as the histories of the NASA Ames Center branches as written by individuals in the branches.
This series is arranged alphabetically, following Watson's own arrangement scheme, and reflecting the fact that materials in this series are topics about which Watson was gathering information. Edie Watson's files are especially useful in understanding the activities and research that was taking place at NASA Ames during the1960s and 1970s. In 1977, as former assistant to the Center Director, Watson asked Branch Chiefs to write a summary history of their branch's work for inclusion in her records.

Series III. Elizabeth Muenger

Physical Description: Boxes 10-12

Series Scope and Content Summary

The third series, Elizabeth Muenger, contains the research files that Muenger collected as she researched the history of Ames to support her monograph Searching the Horizon. Drafts of the book are also found in the series. Muenger's work was published in 1985.
This series is arranged by subject files and then drafts of the book Searching the Horizon. The subject files are arranged alphabetically and the drafts are arranged chronologically. Muenger's files provide insight into Ames' technological achievements, particularly in areas such as life science and thermal protection systems. Muenger also collected several writings by William F. Ballhaus, Jr. then-director of the NASA Ames Research Center.

Physical Description: Boxes 14-15

Series Scope and Content Summary

The fourth series, Glenn Bugos, contains some materials collected by Bugos during the research for his book Atmosphere of Freedom as well as copies of drafts, comments, and layout designs. Bugos' book was published in 2000, during the 60th anniversary of NASA Ames.
The first subseries is "Outline," and is followed by "Drafts," "Peer Reviews," "Draft Comments," and "Images." The strength of this series resides primarily in the comments and reviews of the book offered by NASA Ames reviewers and other NASA historians, whose suggestions and comments shed light on some of the issues deemed significant by individuals who are familiar with NASA Ames as well as the whole NASA community and history.

Series V. Kristen Edwards

Physical Description: Boxes 15-17

Series Scope and Content Summary

The fifth series is Kristen Edwards, and consists of the papers collected during the research of Kristen Edwards, an historian who was hired to write a paper about the role NASA Ames played in the joint US/USSR Cosmos Biosatellite program. Edwards' paper, "The US-Soviet/Russian Cosmos Biosatellite Program," was published in 1999 in the fall issue of Quest: The History of Spaceflight Quarterly.
This series consists primarily of Edwards' subject files, which are arranged alphabetically, although a draft copy of her paper is also included. The Edwards series is an source for documentation of the Cosmos Biosatellite program, which was a series of missions dedicated to biological experimentation in unmanned, Earth-orbiting satellites, although included in the materials are other sources on life sciences and the study of life sciences at NASA Ames.

The final series the Karen-Dunn Haley, which consists of the research collected by Dunn-Haley to support articles she wrote on Ames environmental issues, safety, and human resources. Dunn-Haley's papers were published in 1999.
This series is arranged in two parts: subject files and drafts of papers. The subject files are alphabetically arranged by subject, and the drafts of papers are arranged alphabetically by title. The Dunn-Haley series is an excellent source for materials that reveal information about safety, work, labor and environmental issues addressed at NASA Ames.
