Abstract: William Polk Longmire Jr. (b.1913) was a professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1943-48), and chairman
of the department of Surgery at UCLA (1943-1948). He also served as chairman of the American Board of Surgery (1961-62), and
was a fellow (1961-62), regent (1962-71), chairman of the board of regents (1969-71), and president (1971-73) of the American
College of Surgeons. The collection consists of Longmire's papers, notes, correspondence, appointment diaries, organizational
materials, personal materials, speeches, video and audio tapes, 16mm films, lecture material, and photographs. The collection
also includes correspondence, photographs, and ephemera related to his book,
Starting from scratch: the early history of the UCLA Department of Surgery (1984).

William Polk Longmire Jr. was born on September 14, 1913 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma; AB, University of Oklahoma, 1934; MD, Johns
Hopkins University, 1938; surgeon, Johns Hopkins hospital (1946-48); successively instructor, assistant professor, associate
professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1943-48), then professor of surgery; chairman of the Department
of Surgery at UCLA (1948-76); chairman, American Board of Surgery, 1961-62; fellow (1961-62), regent (1962-71), chairman of
the board of regents (1969-71), and president (1971-73) of the American College of Surgeons; author of
Starting from scratch: the early history of the UCLA Department of Surgery (1984).

Collection consists of papers, notes, correspondence, appointment diaries, organizational materials, personal materials, speeches,
video and audio tapes, 16mm films, lecture material, and photographs relating to William P. Longmire of the UCLA Department
of Surgery. Includes material from his many organizational affiliations, such as the American Board of Surgery and the American
College of Surgeons. Also contains correspondence, photographs, and ephemera related to his book,
Starting from scratch: the early history of the UCLA Department of Surgery (1984).
