Description
William Polk Longmire Jr. (b.1913) was a professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1943-48), and chairman
of the department of Surgery at UCLA (1943-1948). He also served as chairman of the American Board of Surgery (1961-62), and
was a fellow (1961-62), regent (1962-71), chairman of the board of regents (1969-71), and president (1971-73) of the American
College of Surgeons. The collection consists of Longmire's papers, notes, correspondence, appointment diaries, organizational
materials, personal materials, speeches, video and audio tapes, 16mm films, lecture material, and photographs. The collection
also includes correspondence, photographs, and ephemera related to his book,
Starting from scratch: the early history of the UCLA Department of Surgery (1984).
