Background
John Poole (1786?-1872) was an English playwright and author; he wrote primarily satires
and farces, including "Hamlet Travestie" (1810), and "Paul Pry" (1825). Poole was also an
avid theater-goer, both in London and Paris, who knew the latest theater news and
gossip.
