Abstract: A collection of 40 early modern indentures from the United States, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
Administrative History:
The Sutro Library's collection of 40 early modern indentures are from primarily what is now the United States, Ireland, and
the United Kingdom. The earliest indenture dates to 1581 and the most recent is 1908. The documents vary in size, length,
and medium. Some are handwritten, others are printed, and some are a combination of both. The documents cover legal transactions
that are focused on property and are primarily in English. Many contain wax and embossed seals.
The artificial collection brings together these documents that came to the Sutro Library over the course of the Library's
existence.
