Abstract: This collection contains the principal founding, corporation and administrative documents of the Carmel Development Company.
Between 1900 & 1910 the Carmel Development Company purchased multiple parcels of real estate from various land holders in
order to create large tracts that were subdivided into blocks & lots. The original footprints of what would become the incorporated
City of Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1916 and the unincorporated Carmel Highlands were subsequently enlarged as the Carmel Development
Company created, improved, and subdivided multiple additions. The collection is substantially supplemented by original maps,
brochures, photographs and ephemera spanning from 1891 through 1997.

Biography/Administrative History
Between 1900 & 1910 the Carmel Development Company purchased multiple parcels of real estate from various land holders in
order to create large tracts that were subdivided into blocks & lots. The original footprints of what would become the incorporated
City of Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1916 and the unincorporated Carmel Highlands were subsequently enlarged as the Carmel Development
Company created, improved, and subdivided multiple additions. The company dissolved in 1965 after the sale of its final remaining
parcel known as the Glen Deven Mountain Lands.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection contains the principal founding, corporation and administrative documents of the Carmel Development Company
including its auxiliary companies including the Carmel Villa's Co., The Carmel Highlands Water Company & Glen Deven. The collection
is substantially supplemented by original maps, brochures, photographs and ephemera spanning from 1891 through 1997.
