Abstract: The Joseph H. Silverman papers contain

used for research. Silverman was a Hispanist scholar and professor of Spanish literature at

Biographical Note
Joseph H. Silverman (1924-1989) was a Hispanist scholar and professor of Spanish literature
at USC, UCLA, and UCSC. He was the provost of Adlai Stevenson College from 1974 to 1981 and
director of the University of California's Education Abroad Program in Madrid from 1983 to
1985. Silverman specilized in Spanish Golden Age literature, Sephardic balladry, and the
cultural influence of Sephardic Jews on Spanish culture. He often collaborated with other
Hispanist scholars, such as Samuel G. Armistead and Israel J. Katz. He published nearly 300
books, articles, and reviews throughout his career.
Scope and Contents
This collection contains Silverman's research and teaching materials, correspondence, and
materials from Silverman's personal life. Also included are audiovisual materials, such as
reel-to-reel tapes, DAT tapes, and audio cassettes, that Silverman used for research.
Arrangement
The collection is arranged into five series:
- Series 1. Research
- Series 2. Education
- Series 3. Correspondence
- Series 4. Personal life
- Series 5. Audiovisual material
Materials in the Research, Education, and Audiovisual material series were kept in
their original order. Material in the Correspondence and Personal life series are arranged
chronologically.
Separated Materials
Publications from Silverman's library are cataloged separately and are available via the
UCSC Library catalog.
