    Scope and Content

Photograph album, probably produced between 1875 and 1890, containing views of the Bois de Boulogne, Château de Saint-Cloud, and Mont-Saint-Michel. The first eight leaves contain photographs by Michelez (6), photographer specializing in art reproductions, and Jarrot (2) of paintings of scenes in the Bois de Boulogne, dated 1863 and 1864, by Pierre Justin Ouvrié, including "Porte des Princes, Boulevart d'Auteuil;" "Villa Rossini, près la Grille de Passy;" "Grande Allée des Accacias, près de l'Ile des Cedres;" "Vue du Mont Valérien prise de la Plaine de Longchamps;" "Le lac supérieur, vue prise entre les deux lacs;" "Le pont près du Chalet des Iles, vue prise du Chemin de Ceinture;" "Croix Catelan;" and "Mare d'Auteuil." The château and town of Saint-Cloud, located 10 km. west of Paris, are the subject of the next nine photographs. The photo entitled "Ruines de Saint-Cloud" shows the damage resulting from French counter-fire during the Franco-Prussian War in Oct. 1870; the damaged chateau was razed in 1891. There are also two photos documenting the destruction of homes and buildings in the town of Saint-Cloud from Prussian bombardment during the war. Achille Quinet's photos highlight two architectural features of the chateau and surrounding park: the entrance gate [?] and the Grande Cascade, an imposing fountain designed by Le Pautre in 1660-1665. Two photos by Gabriel Blaise show repairs being made to a smaller unidentified chateau, featuring turrets and mansard roof. Also included is a photograph of the abbey Mont-St.-Michel, with inkstamp of "Pelerinage du Mont-St.-Michel." The album concludes with a large photograph of an unidentified painting of Madonna and Child, and five smaller photos (21 x 12.2 cm) of statues of gods and goddesses, including Demeter, with sickle and stalks of wheat, and Hermes, with caduceus.
Possible production dates suggested by dates of destruction and razing of Château de Saint-Cloud, and photographers dates.
