Abstract: The Helene Moglen papers is comprised
of records from Moglen's academic career at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Included in the collection are her resarch files, teaching and writing material,
administrative material, and her email. Moglen was a feminist literary scholar and author
who taught at UC Santa Cruz from 1978 to 2008. She was the first female dean in the UC
system and she also founded the Women's Studies program at UCSC.

The Research Files series and the Writing series are arranged alphabetically. The
Teaching Material series and the UC Santa Cruz Administrative Material series are arranged
chronologically.
Biographical Note
Helene Moglen (1936-2018) was a feminist literary scholar and author who taught at UC Santa
Cruz from 1978 to 2008. Moglen joined UCSC in 1978 as Dean of Humanities, Provost of Kresge
College, and a professor of literature. She was the first female dean in the UC system.
Moglen also founded the Women's Studies program and chaired the program from 1984-1989.
Around 1980, Mogeln established and chaired UCSC's first sexual harassment committee. She
also founded the Institute for Advanced Feminist Research and was the director until 2006.
Moglen retired in 2008 but continued to teach one class a year until 2013.
After Moglen retired, she worked with Nancy Chen, an Anthropology professor at UCSC, to
create and co-direct Santa Cruz Commons. The program began in 2012 and was a place where
activists from the university and the community could come together to collaborate.

Content Description
The Helene Moglen papers is comprised of records from Moglen's academic career at the
University of California, Santa Cruz. Included in the collection are her research files,
teaching materials, administrative materials, writings, and emails. Moglen's research files
contain her handwritten and typed research notes, as well as annotated copies of articles,
essays, and chapters. The Teaching Materials series consists of Moglen's lecture notes,
reading lists, syllabuses, and test questions. Much of this material is for her Gothic
Imagination course. The UC Santa Cruz Administrative Material series contains material
related to Moglen's time at UCSC other than teaching, such as workshps and conferences she
participated in on campus, committees she was a memeber of, and correspondence with other
faculty. Also included is material related to Santa Cruz Commons. The writing series
contains drafts and notes for various chapters in Moglen's books, as well as correspondence
with her publishers. Moglen's email consists of correspondence sent between her and her
family, discussions around Walnut Commons, the co-housing building she was a part of, and
courses and workshops that she taught.
