    Abstract: The collection consists of the business records of the Southern Pacific Employees Hospital Association (SPEHA) and of Southern Pacific Memorial Hospitals, Incorporated (SPMHI) from 1945 to 1987. They include by-laws, resolutions, materials about their respective Boards of Directors, and minutes and correspondence. While much of the collection is contained in eleven leather-bound ledger volumes arranged in chronological order, a small portion of the collection is stored in file folders in a document box (several of the items contained therein were previously stored in vinyl binders and are now stored in acid-free folders). Most of the records are minutes and correspondence, and they reflect the regular meetings and decision making of the Boards of Directors of both SPEHA and SPMHI, and there is also a smaller group minutes and correspondence of the Board of Managers of the Southern Pacific Hospital Department.

    Biography/Administrative History

    The Southern Pacific Employees Hospital Association (SPEHA), a non-profit corporation, incorporated in California on September 10, 1963. Sponsoring and operating a pre-paid health plan for Southern Pacific Railroad employees and retirees and their dependents until 1971, the corporation employed physicians and related health care staff at the Southern Pacific Hospital located at 1400 Fell Street in San Francisco, California, and at the Carl Hayden Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. An affiliate of SPEHA was Southern Pacific Memorial Hospitals, Incorporated (SPMHI), was also incorporated in California on September 10, 1963. SPMHI’s purpose was to own the hospitals. SPMHI was formally dissolved on April 9, 1987.
