"子供部隊長 Kodomo butaichō" (Child unit commander)
Information
Date - 1942 September 5
Summary - Kenji is upset that his father is a carpenter and not a soldier, as the kids of soldiers seem to always look down on him. One day, Kenji is forced to be a Chinese soldier when playing pretend battle with his friends. On the same day, Kenji comes down with a fever. His father is drafted for the war and worries about sending Kenji to the hospital, but Kenji’s mother reassures him, showing him the money she had saved with postal life insurance. Kenji’s father goes off to war relieved, and when Kenji recovers from his illness, he becomes the child unit commander in a pretend battle.

Child unit commander
Screenwriter: Shigeo Yamamoto
Illustrator: Kunihiko Hamuro
Directed by TeishinshÃ…Â Kanrikyoku (Ministry of Communications Administration Bureau)
Production by Nihon KyÃ…Âiku Kamishibai KyÃ…Âkai (The Association of Japanese Educational Kamishibai)
(Explanation of the cover)
TAKESHI
Alright, this is an order!
Chibiroku, stop looking around. No matter how long my orders are, you have to pay attention. Order! There is an enemy army hiding behind the shrine. Our army is to attack them from here immediately.
Commander Ichiro will take Private Chibiroku and attack from the right, Commander Susumu, take Chief Petty Officer Kenji…
(Pull the slide.)
Card 1
KENJI
(Complaining)
Take-chan.
TAKESHI
What, Ken-chan!
KENJI
I’m a petty officer again?
TAKESHI
Yeah, you are.
KENJI
Can’t you make me a commander for once? I always have to lend my sword to Susumu-chan, it’s so boring.
TAKESHI
No. What are you saying? If your dad isn’t a soldier, you are a foot soldier, that is the rule of our army.
(Change the tone for each of the following voices)
VOICE
(From a distance)
Takeshi, time for dinner. I made pork cutlets today.
VOICE
Rokuzo, we’re having sashimi. Hurry home.
VOICE
Susumu, your sister has bought some tasty snacks.
KENJI’S MOTHER
Kenji, your father is home. Go take a bath.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 2
KENJI
Mother, when is Father going to be a soldier?
MOTHER
Why do you ask?
KENJI
Because as long as Father is not a soldier, I can’t be a unit commander.
MOTHER
You mean when you play battle?
KENJI
Yeah.
MOTHER
Well, your father will eventually become a soldier.
KENJI
Really?
MOTHER
Of course. But until he is summoned to be a soldier, he will continue his job as a carpenter.
KENJI
I’m sick of this. A soldier is so much better than a carpenter.
MOTHER
Don’t say such a thing. Didn’t your teacher say, what was that difficult word he taught you? Yes, occupational service! A soldier on the frontlines is the same as a carpenter on the home front.
KENJI
But a carpenter is boring.
MOTHER
Now, now, I’ve prepared something good for dinner.
KENJI
What?
MOTHER
Split and dried mackerel.
KENJI
Oh, that again.
MOTHER
You ought to be punished. Mackerel has the most nutrients.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 3
FATHER
There’s no reason to be working so late at night. We rarely get rationed sake, won’t you say “I’ll pour you a glass†and be a good companion for once? How happy I’d be to hear those words, even coming from my stale old wife.
(Handwritten note: if the audience is children, change the line to “What, dried mackerel again? You make me eat such boring food every day.â€Â)
MOTHER
What, using such bad words in front of your child again. Didn’t Kenji’s homeroom teacher come by just the other day, again? He said, “Kenji-kun has good grades and an honest nature and is a very good child, but sometimes he uses such impolite words. I’m at a loss as to what to do.â€Â
FATHER
I’m a carpenter. If I talked like nobility it’d take me an entire day to carry a single piece of wood. Pour me a glass.
MOTHER
Drink by yourself. I am going to work hard and save a lot of money.
FATHER
What? All you can talk about is saving money. You can’t use that money in the afterlife. I hate cheapskates.
NARRATOR
His father was talking so fervently that Kenji could not bring himself to say “Please become a soldier.†He had no choice but to quietly read his magazine.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 4
KENJI
I’m home. Mother, get me my sword.
MOTHER
Don’t go out to play yet, review your schoolwork first.
KENJI
No, I have nothing to review today. Tomorrow is our gym competition and I’ve practiced a lot. Mother, we’re going to be marching in file, but of course the squad leader had to be a soldier’s child. I’m so fed up. Won’t father hurry up and become a soldier? Get me my sword, hurry. Take-chan and everyone else are waiting at the shrine.
MOTHER
Even if you take your sword you can’t use it yourself so it’s boring, isn’t it?
KENJI
But if I don’t take my sword, they won’t let me play.
MOTHER
Even so, at least put your shoes away before you go. You can’t be so sloppy. Besides, your face looks a bit red. Do you have a fever?
KENJI
Whatever. You’re a cheapskate, Mother.
(As you pull the slide)
NARRATOR
Kenji cursed at his mother and ran off.
Card 5
TAKESHI
Ken-chan, you didn’t bring your sword? We can’t play battle without it. Go get it.
KENJI
It’s because Mother told me I can’t go out to play right away. I couldn’t bring it with me. So let’s all be foot soldiers today.
TAKESHI
No way. It’s no fun without a general and a commanding officer. There’s no such a thing as a war with just foot soldiers. Go sneak in and get it.
KENJI
Yeah, but my head hurts a little. If I go home, I might come down with a fever and not be able to come back. So let’s just use sticks today.
TAKESHI
How boring. Then Ken-chan, you and Chibiroku will be Chinese soldiers. If not, I won’t let you play.
NARRATOR
In the end, Kenji and Chibiroku had to be Chinese soldiers, who were to be killed by the Japanese soldiers.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 6
CHIBIROKU
(As if it were nothing)
Ma’am, Ken-chan’s dead.
MOTHER
(Extremely shocked)
What, dead! Where? Why?
CHIBIROKU
He’s a Chinese soldier, and when Take-chan went clunk and finished him off, he died.
MOTHER
W-where is he?
CHIBIROKU
Behind the shrine. He started crying after he was dead so Take-chan got scared and ran away.
NARRATOR
Kenji’s mother was relieved, but started to feel troubled when she thought of his feverish face from earlier.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 7
FATHER
Doctor, how is it?
DOCTOR
(Putting on airs)
Indeed. At any rate, he has a high fever, so we must not take any chances.
FATHER
He’s not going to die or anything, is he? His illness, what illness is it?
DOCTOR
Indeed. It is necessary to watch the development of this illness. For now, it is ambiguous.
FATHER
Oh, really. Is “ambiguous†the name of an illness?
DOCTOR
Uh, no, it is yet unknown.
FATHER
Well that’s troublesome, Doctor. Get a grip on yourself, I’ll pay as much, no, I’ll manage to raise as much money as you want.
DOCTOR
Indeed, in any case, he needs to be hospitalized right away. Sometimes these cases can be fatal if we act too late.
NARRATOR
Hearing the doctor say such a thing, Kenji’s father became even more flustered.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 8
(As soon as they see the doctor out)
FATHER
(Hurriedly)
Anyway, I can’t just sit still. I’ll be going right away.
MOTHER
Dear, where are you going?
FATHER
To Mr. Fujita’s place.
MOTHER
To do what? We’re about to hospitalize him.
FATHER
That’s why I have to go. Money first and all that.
MOTHER
You don’t need to worry about that.
FATHER
How could I not worry? Sometimes these illnesses can become fatal if we don’t act right away, you know? I’ll be right back.
MOTHER
(With force)
I’m telling you, you don’t need to worry.
NARRATOR
However, Kenji’s father didn’t even stop to listen to his wife,
(As you pull the slide)
NARRATOR
And rushed off.
Card 9
FUJITA
Hmm, that’s worrisome, but as you know, my old lady and now my daughter have become sick as well. On top of that, I unfortunately sent my eldest son, who’s going to university in Tokyo, his monthly tuition fee and allowance today. So, there’s no way I can raise a large sum of a hundred or two hundred. Kuma-san, I’m sorry, I know you came all this way.
NARRATOR
Hearing Mr. Fujita’s unexpected words, Kuma-san became somber.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 10
ORDERLY
This is Kumaichi Suzuki’s home, yes?
MOTHER
Yes.
ORDERLY
This is a draft notice. Thank you for your hard work.
MOTHER
Ah, that’s…
(A pause)
(Pull the slide quietly.)
Card 11
CHILD
Mother, what is it?
MOTHER
(In a teary voice)
Kenji, your father is finally going to be a soldier.
CHILD
A soldier?! I’m so happy. Then, I can become a unit commander.
MOTHER
Yes. You can be a commander, or even a general. But first you need to be quiet, listen well to the doctor, take your medicine, and get well.
KENJI
Yeah, I promise I’ll take all my medicine and get better soon. And then, I can be a commander.
MOTHER
Now, no more talking, go to bed.
KENJI
Yeah.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 12
KENJI
Listen up, order! Private first Class Take, far left, Private Chibiroku center, Chief Petty Officer Susumu far right. Once deployed, attack the enemy in front of us. When you charge, loudly say, “Ahhhhh!â€Â
(Pull the slide.)
Card 13
KENJI
Advance!
ALL
Ahhhhh!
KENJI
Go!
ALL
Ahhhhh!
(A pause)
(Pull the slide.)
Card 14
FATHER
What is going on? Kenji is yelling in his sleep.
MOTHER
He must be dreaming. I told him that you were to become a soldier so he thinks he’s become a unit commander, too, and is overjoyed.
FATHER
How innocent. What a cute kid.
I feel bad for him.
MOTHER
Why?
FATHER
I can’t raise the money. Mr. Fujita has a lot going on too, and he says he doesn’t have a lot of money. At this rate I can’t go to battle with peace of mind.
MOTHER
Dear.
FATHER
Huh?
MOTHER
Relax. Let me show you something.
(Pulling the slide)
NARRATOR
With that, she stood up and opened the dresser drawer.
Card 15
FATHER
Really! We can get 400 yen?
MOTHER
That’s right. After coming here, this life insurance was recommended to me, and next month is the date of maturity. I was told, just think of it as throwing away two yen a month, so I really thought of it like I was throwing it away, but before I knew it, I had saved 400 yen.
FATHER
I see. How remarkable.
MOTHER
Do you still think I’m a cheapskate?
FATHER
No, I would take off my kabuto helmet to you. Now that I can send my precious son to the hospital, I can go to war with peace of mind. What a gracious wife. For a time, I really had no idea what to do.
MOTHER
That’s why I said “wait†earlier.
FATHER
In any case, I was so flustered. And I never would’ve dreamed that we had something so impressive.
NARRATOR
For the first time, Kuma-san laughed in a carefree manner.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 16
FATHER
“Kenji has become a unit commander and is happy. I hear he triumphantly waves his sword.â€Â
Kenji, I’m sure that kid is acting big. Takeshi’s father is a private first-class, Susumu’s father is a chief petty officer, and I’m a private. There isn’t a big difference, but Kenji! Don’t lose to Takeshi or Susumu.
Father will also become a chief petty officer soon, so don’t be upset.
“As for Dr. Araki, he made our hospital fees cheaper because we are the family of a soldier at the front,†huh.
(Pull the insert)
FATHER
I’m grateful. He kept putting on airs and cocking his head saying indeed, indeed, so I had thought he was a quack, but I guess I was way off. Dr. Araki, I’m sorry.
“On top of that, I’m being allowed to work at Dr. Araki’s hospital as a launderer.â€Â
I’m even more grateful. It’s not something anyone can do. My wife is admirable, too, if I say so myself. By the time I get home, I’m sure she would have saved a thousand yen with life insurance.
NARRATOR
Kuma-san was talking to himself incessantly when he heard footsteps behind him and turned around.
(Pull the slide.)
Card 17
NARRATOR (continued)
The unit commander was standing there.
COMMANDER
Sounds like your family is prospering.
KUMA-SAN
Sir.
COMMANDER
You saved a thousand yen, that’s impressive.
KUMA-SAN
Sir, not myself. It’s my wife. And not “saved,†but “will probably save.â€Â
COMMANDER
Haha, I see. A letter from your hometown, huh? Does it say anything else interesting?
KUMA-SAN
Yes, sir, it says my child has become a unit commander.
COMMANDER
A child becoming a unit commander?
KUMA-SAN
Yes, in pretend battle.
COMMANDER
Haha, a child unit commander. How amusing.
NARRATOR
At the commander’s laughter, Kuma-san, who until now had been stiff, smiled despite himself.
(Pull the slide.)

Meanwhile, back in his hometown, the unit led by Commander Kenji was loudly singing the Japanese Patriotic March as they advanced. Above them, a red dragonfly glided by. Autumn had arrived.
