Collections are processed to a variety of levels depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived user
interest and research value, availability of staff and resources, and competing priorities. Library Special Collections provides
a standard level of preservation and access for all collections and, when time and resources permit, conducts more intensive
processing. These materials have been arranged and described according to national and local standards and best practices.
We are committed to providing ethical, inclusive, and anti-racist description of the materials we steward, and to remediating
existing description of our materials that contains language

History
Tract maps present certain problems in indexing or cataloging since they do not all have a common element such as a name or
a cartographer. The approach, therefore, that seems most logical is to list the maps by location. The locator used by the
Cadastral Map Collection is the
Thomas Brothers Maps' Los Angeles County Popular Street Atlas, 1931 and
Orange County, 1981. A few maps fall outside of this territory, and for these, eleven leaves of the
Thomas ... Riverside County, 1978, and
Ventura County, 1979, have been included. The location is designated by atlas page number and grid coordinates (the area where the letters printed
across the top of the page intersect the numbers printed down the side). This location designation has been used as the call
number of individual maps.
There are various ways of approaching this collection. If the name of a tract is known, it is listed alphabetically in the
finding aid. In addition, there are chronological and location (call) number lists. Few maps have all of these elements. If
the location of the tract map is all that is known, the
Thomas Atlas must be checked to find a location designation. The finding aid must then be consulted to see if a map exists for that location.
When more than one tract appears on a map, each tract has been given its own location designation. The first such location
designation has been used for the call number and all other tracts have bee cited with a see reference to that number.
Where information about the owner or realtor is available, it has been included in the finding aid.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of tract and cadastral maps of real estate developments, some projected but never realized, located in
Los Angeles and vicinity. Most tracts are located in Los Angeles and Orange counties, but some are in Riverside and Ventura
counties. Tracts are listed alphabetically, chronologically, and by location (call) number in the finding aid.
Organization and Arrangement
Collection is arranged alphabetically by name of tract.
