History
Pioneer Church is the oldest organized church in Sacramento. On September 16, 1849, in
the schoolhouse on the northwest corner of I and 3rd Streets, a small group of men voted
to form the First Church of Christ Congregational, in Sacramento City. Rev. Joseph A.
Benton, the first pastor, was one of the leading California pioneers.
