Description
This collection contains materials related to California history, especially that of the San Bernardino County region. There are also materials related to Mormon pioneers in the San Bernardino Valley and education in the Philippine Islands. Most of the items in the collection are secondary source materials gathered by historian and teacher George W. Beattie (born 1859) and his wife, Helen Pruitt Beattie, in the course of their research on California history.
Background
Historian and teacher George W. Beattie (born 1859) came to California in 1874. He was a leading educator in Redlands, California, and later taught at the University of California at Berkeley and in the Philippines where he served as a superintendent of schools and helped organize the University of the Philippines in Manila. In San Bernardino, CA, he was active in community service and historical research. Along with his wife, Helen Pruitt Beattie, he wrote Heritage of the valley (1939) and other publications.
