    Abstract: Consists of the papers of Harvey Monroe Hall, his wife Carlotta Case Hall and their daughter Martha Hall Niccolls. The papers of Harvey Monroe Hall contain correspondence, notes, reprints and newspapers clippings relating to his family life and his career in botany including specimen collecting, research and teaching. The papers of Carlotta Case Hall contain correspondence, writings and diaries, papers relating to her families genealogy, and papers relating to her husbands illness and death. The papers of Martha Hall Niccolls contain correspondence, writings, diaries and scrapbooks. A list of correspondents can be found in the indexing terms.

    Biographical Information

    Harvey Monroe Hall was born in Illinois on March 29, 1874 and brought up near Riverside, California. An early interest in nature led him to a career in botany, After graduation from the University of California in 1901, Hall received his Master of Science degree there in 1902 and Ph.D. in 1906.
    In 1910 Hall married Carlotta Case, a 1905 graduate of the University of California and a collector of western ferns. Together they wrote A Yosemite Flora.
    He was associated with the University of California from 1902-1919, serving successively as Assistant Botanist, University of California Agricultural Experiment states, 1902-1903; Instructor in Botany, Agricultural Experiment Station, 1903-1908; Assistant Professor of Economic Botany, Agricultural Experiment Station, 1908-1915; Associate Professor, 1915-1919.
    In 1919 he became a staff member of the Carnegie Institution, Division of Plant Biology, at Stanford University, serving also as Professor of Botany, and as Honorary Curator of the Herbarium, University of California. These posts he retained until his death in Washington, D.C. in 1932.
