    Correspondence of the Meussdorffer family and to the J. C. Meussdorffer Hat Manufacturing Company. Most of the correspondence is concerned with the business.

    Biography

    John Meussdorffer was born in Bavaria on April 9, 1823. He came from a family which had been making hats for several generations. He came to the Unted States in 1847 and California in 1849. He opened a hat business in San Francisco. The J. C. Meussdorffer Hat Manufacturing Company came to have branches in Sacramento, Marysville and Portland. Meussdorffer took his sons into partnership in 1877.
    Mr. Meussdorffer also was an investor in real estate. He was a president of the German Benevolent Society and of the German Hospital. He was a member of the Committee of Vigilance in 1856. He died on December 3, 1894. The business, under the name J. C. Meussdorffer's Sons, last appears in the San Francisco City Directory of 1943.
