Tours Series 6. 1972-1989

Scope and Contents note

The East West Players conducted three kinds of tours in order to reach out to the general public in the Los Angeles area including East West Players in Revue, Special Project in Foreign Languages, and Total Theatre Ensemble. In addition, EWP also turns popular productions, like HARRY KELLY, into school and community tours. In 1979, EWP received a grant from the CBS Foundation for the project MADE IN AMERICA, a eight hour festival performance.

Scope and Contents note

The Total Theatre Ensemble (TTE) tours at school and community centers, presenting short pieces like children's plays, which EWP member rehearse in classes. Based upon the vision of Mako, the participants of TTE "teach, act, clean costumes, sweep floors, sell tickets, write letters, stuff envelopes, run workshops and, in general, maintain the theater". TTP ceases its existence in the 1980s because of financial difficulty.

Arrangement note

Most of the materials in this subseries are in Box 58, arranged under play titles.

Scope and Contents note

In the late 1970s, EWP starts the Special Project in Foreign Languages, staging plays for immigrant Asian communities. With a subsidy from both the city and county of Los Angeles, EWP tours at community centers, churches, temples, hospitals, and nursing homes. The productions are done in Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, and Tagalog in order to serve first generation immigrants.

Scope and Contents note

Made In America is a project proposed by Mako to exhibit Asian American Hybridity. In the program, Mako states the purpose of this production: "The Asian/Pacific American people have gone through their period of anger - an anger with springs from the fact that we ourselves have never fully acknowledged our existence. But the time is now at hand when we must not only acknowledge but also celebrate our exitence, celebrate what our parents and grandparents have contributed to this society." With the generous CBS grant, EWP stages this eight hour festival tour at public parks in Los Angeles County from 1979 August 25 to September.
