Abstract:
The Northwestern California Forest Communities Collection includes photographs, maps, and architectural and design drawings selected from several Humboldt State University Library collections for this project. Images were chosen to illustrate the broad range of people and activities typically associated with the early timber industry in Humboldt County. The company towns of Crannell (Little River Redwood Company) and Samoa (Vance Redwood Lumber Company and Hammond Lumber Company) are especially well documented. Promotional materials are included as well as residential, industrial and mechanical design drawings and infrastructure maps. Especially noteworthy are the series of promotional photographs produced for the Little River Redwood Company by Dold & Dold from 1924 and 1930 and the architectural drawings for the company town of Samoa which includes work by M. DeLin and E. F. Reese. Consult the library for more information about the collections from which these images were selected.

Acquisition information:
This collection was created by Humboldt State University Library staff from 2005-06 as part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project.
Processing information:

The digitization project was part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP), a multi-year program supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Leveraging the infrastructure of the California Digital Library (CDL) in partnership with Califa and Infopeople, the LHDRP explores a model to aggregate, preserve, and provide permanent public access to local history materials maintained by California cultural heritage institutions via a single statewide online access point. For more information, see the LHDRP website.
