In the late 1930s and early 1940s, a group of women in San Diego dedicated to the education of young children met to exchange
ideas and share experiences. Their goal was to encourage better understanding of and interest in the young child. They invited
experts in the field of early childhood education to come and talk with them and discuss the issues of child education. In
1955, the Northern and Southern California Association for Nursery Education drafted a constitution for the proposed California
Association for Nursery Education which became a reality as an affiliate of the National Association for Nursery Education.
In 1961, the office of the San Diego Association for the Education of Young Children was opened, and the charter for the organization
was drafted in December of 1964.

The collection consists of historical reports, chronology, constitution, articles of incorporation, fliers, correspondence,
newspaper clippings, biographical information, membership directories, newsletters, scrapbooks, and oral history interviews.
A small amount of material from the California and Southern California chapters, and from the National association are also
present.
