7. Photographs

Box 47, Box 39, Box 114, Box 35

Photographs

Physical Description: 4 boxes (approximately)

Scope and Contents

Largely publicity stills of Samuel and the Oakland Symphony, including rehearsals and performances. There are also images of Gerhard with Darius Milhaud, Igor Stravinsky, and other composers, such as Jani Christou and Henry Brant, and at Ojai in 1971 with Kraft, Takahashi, and Boone. Musicians such as Germaine Prevost are also included, and there are many images from the SF Ballet. Some photographs date from his time at the University of Cincinnati. There is also a folder of family pictures. A few photographs contain autographs and inscriptions by such persons as by Igor Oistrakh, Pierre Monteux and Glen Gould (from 1959). Portions of the photographs were exposed to moisture, causing some to adhere to each other.
Box 47

Photographs: personal

Physical Description: 0.5 box

Scope and Contents

informal snapshots, negatives, a few slides. Most are unidentified and undated, although many prints are with their negatives (which should include dates). Emulsion break-down has caused many photos to stick together badly. Principle subjects are family, friends, and travel, although there are some images of Samuel, Milhaud, and others conducting rehearsals, as well as some dance/ballet performances. There are also pictures of Arthur Samuel and Norris Embry's paintings.
