Scope and Content of Collection
The collection contains zines [aka fanzines, sometimes magazines] acquired by Ruel Gaviola, Santa Barbara collector and editor/publisher
of
Amusing Yourself to Death [AYTD], a review zine issued from 1997 to 1999. The bulk of the collection is from the latter 1990s, but many of the zines
are undated. The zines in the collection are small-circulation publications of original or appropriated text and images, covering
a wide range of subjects including art, literature, personal narratives, politics, popular culture, religion, sex, single-topic
obsessions, and women's rights. Titles often are humorous or provocative, sometimes with plays on words, e.g.
Moonifest Destiny. Many defy categorization.
