    Project Information

These photographs and other images were assembled primarily from the Berkeley Public Library's Berkeley History Room collection, including several from the Swingle Collection, a subset of the History Room collection. A significant number of images came from the Berkeley Fire Department's historical photo collection, as well as from the Shades of South Berkeley collection, which is housed at the South Branch of the Berkeley Public Library. The digitization project was part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP), a multi-year program supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Leveraging the infrastructure of the California Digital Library (CDL) in partnership with Califa and Infopeople, the LHDRP explores a model to aggregate, preserve, and provide permanent public access to local history materials maintained by California cultural heritage institutions via a single statewide online access point. For more information, see the project website .
