    Historical Background

The International Center for Humanistic Discourses at the University of California, Irvine, was a research center to study "the cultural function of the humanistic discourses and, more particularly, the constitutive contribution of the arts to the formation of culture." (Quote from project proposal, circa 1992-1993). The center was established by a grant from the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation with matching support from UC Irvine. Principal investigators were Murray Krieger and Wolfgang Iser, but members of the center included Hazard Adams, Ernst Behler, Hendrik Birus, Jacques Derrida, J. Hillis Miller, K. Ludwig Pfeiffer, Bill Readings, Pauline Yu, and Wang Ching-hsien.
The center organized the The International Conference on Humanistic Discourse, held in 1994 (April 3-8) at UC Irvine, 1995 at UC Irvine, 1996 (September 16-20) in Munich, 1997 (October 5-11) in Seattle, and 1999 (April 7-9) at UC Irvine. Papers from the 1994, 1995, and 1996 conferences were published in the online journal Surfaces (University of Montreal).
