The collection contains originals and photostats of correspondence and journals, 1862-1864. There also is a microfilm copy, which has been cataloged separately (Wyles E601 S6).
Background
Samuel S. Smyth, during the Civil War, was a captain in the Illinois Light Artillery, 1st Regiment (Vol.) Battery F. For information relating to the 1st, see: Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois, Volume VIII, revised by Brigadier General J. N. Reece (1901).
