The collection contains mainly drafts of writings and research files including copies of 16th-18th century Spanish and Mexican
government documents, of a UCSB Latin American scholar.
Background
Philip Wayne Powell was born October 30, 1913 in Chino, California. He joined the UCSB faculty in 1948 and continued to teach
at Santa Barbara until 1981. He is known for his research in Hispanic civilization. Powell died September 17, 1987, in Santa
Barbara, California.
