Biographical/Historical Note
Gerard William Kelley, 1903-1969. Brigadier general in the United States Army. Commanding officer, 165th Infantry Regiment,
1943-1945.
Scope and Content of Collection
Colonel Gerard W. Kelley, Infantry, United States Army. For Meritorious service in connection with military operations against
the enemy at Saipan*, Marianas Island, during the period 16-28 June 1944. Colonel Kelley accompanied the landing of the two
battalions. The attack was launched despite heavy mortar and artillery fire, and due to sound planning and able leadership.
After Colonel Kelley attacked and secured the strategically important airport, he then continued across the island and reached
the east coast, south of Magicienne Bay, trapping a large number of Japanese on Nafutan Peninsula. His swift and relentless
attack demoralized the enemy and rendered useless well-prepared plans for the defense of the airfield. Colonel Kelley was
wounded 28 June 1944, and was evacuated several days later.
