Abstract: Collection consists of newspaper
clippings, government publications, reports, a map, and other documents related to the Los
Angeles Aqueduct and conflict with Owens Valley residents. Papers represent the voices of
Los Angeles County government officials, disgruntled Owens Valley residents, engineers, and
individuals writing about the Los Angeles Aqueduct. Materials detail the water battle
between Owens Valley residents and Los Angeles officials through newspapers, propaganda, and
other publications. Also included are later publications on the environmental impact of the
Los Angeles Aqueduct as well as written histories of the Owens Valley project and Los
Angeles Aqueduct.

Portions of collection have been purchased from Dawson's bookstore in 1946. Additional
items have been culled from a variety of sources by Special Collections staff.

Scope and Content of the Collection
Materials consist of a multitude of newspaper sources from the Los Angeles and Owens Valley
region. Collection also includes government reports from the Los Angeles Department of Water
and Power, propaganda, and published papers from committees supporting Owens Valley
residents and the region. Includes association reports such as those from the Association of
American Portland Cement Manufacturers and American Society of Civil Engineers as well as a
map of the Owens Valley region by the United States Geological Survey. Travel brochures
created by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, magazine articles, a typewritten
correspondence, a speech, and other materials tell of the Los Angeles Aqueduct's
construction and value as well as its impact on Owens Valley residents.
