Biography/Organization History
Florian Cajori was born at Saint Aignan near Thusis in Switzerland February 28, 1859, came to the United States in 1875 and
was graduated at the University of Wisconsin in 1883. The year 1884-85 he spent at the Johns Hopkins University and in 1885
was called to Tulane University to teach mathematics. A breakdown in health sent him to Colorado, where he prepared a monograph
on the
Teaching and History of Mathematics in the United States. This started him in the direction of his life work.
In 1889 he joined the faculty of Colorado College. There he published a history of elementary mathematics in 1896 and a history
of physics in 1899. He was then invited to contribute to the fourth volume of Cantor's treatise on the history of mathematics
which appeared in 1908. Year by year his scholarship became more and more profound and the number and quality of his contributions
to the history of mathematics increased steadily to the time of his death August 15, 1930. He was appointed professor of the
history of mathematics in the University of California in 1918, where he came to be recognized as the leading historian of
mathematics in this country.
