    Biographical / Historical

    A lifelong gay and political activist, John O'Brien participated in the Stonewall Riots and cofounded the Gay Liberation Front in New York. O'Brien was an organizer for the National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights in 1979 and 1987. He was a member of the National Steering Committee of the Mobilization Against AIDS, Lesbian and Gay Network Mobilization for Survival, and Propeace. He worked on gay rights causes in California, including fighting against Proposition 64, the LaRouche Initiative. O'Brien ran for California State Assembly in 1984 as a candidate of the Peace and Freedom Party and ran for West Hollywood City Council in 1990. O'Brien served as president of ONE Institute in the mid-1990s.
