    Abstract: Donn Shannon and Jack Shickell papers (SAFR 21637, HDC 1372) consist of two folders of documents related to seamen Donn Shannon and Jack Shickell, both of whom worked at the San Francisco Maritime Museum. Most of the materials are undated. It includes a leather-bound notebook belonging to Shannon, from 1941 and undated; a letter from Shickell to Shannon; a clipping regarding Karl Kortum and the BALCLUTHA; lists of workers; a worksheet for ship fitting problems; a first draft of a chapter of Shickell's memoir titled Spun Yarn (or "Awhaling We Go"); and Shannon's copy of an agreement between the San Francisco Naval Shipyard Metal Trades Council and the San Francisco Naval Shipyard Office of Industrial Manager, USN, Twelfth Naval District and the Office of Supervisor of Shipbuilding, USN, San Francisco, from 1964. The collection is available for research use without restriction.

    Historical or Biographical Note

    Donn C. Shannon (1908-1989) was a crew member aboard the C.A. THAYER on her 1957 voyage from Seattle to San Francisco. He was also involved in the restoration of the BALCLUTHA and was a ticket taker on the ship.
    Captain Jack Shickell was a former ship keeper on the BALCLUTHA.
