Project 10 was established at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles in 1984 by Dr. Virginia Uribe. It is an on-campus counseling
and drop-out prevention program for LGBT youth that provides nonjudgmental counseling services, accurate information on homosexuality,
and a venue to build positive self-esteem. The program was created in response to an openly gay student who dropped out of
Fairfax High School after being bullied and harrassed for his sexual orientation.
Founder Dr. Virginia Uribe was a biology teacher at Fairfax High School and came out publicly as a lesbian when she created
the program. Dr. Uribe received her bachelors and masters degrees from Immaculate Heart College in 1955 and 1962, respectively.
She completed her PhD in Psychology from Sierra University in 1988. For her doctorate research, she studied LGBT youth and
their treatment in the public education system.
The first of its kind in the nation, Project 10 was supported by the Los Angeles Board of Education and the National Education
Association. It was implemented in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) schools, as well as at universities and schools
nationwide. Dr. Uribe was a keynote speaker at several conferences, and was active in promoting Project 10 by appearing on
television and radio, and writing letters to newspaper editors.
Models of Pride, a free one-day conference that addresses topics of interest for LGBT youth, was created by the Gay and Lesbian
Education Commission of the LAUSD in 1993. Friends of Project 10, Inc., the non-profit branch of Project 10 created in 1986,
took over the planning for Models of Pride from 1998 until 2010. LifeWorks, the LGBT youth mentoring program of the LA Gay
and Lesbian Center, became the presenter of the conference from 2010 to present day.
After Dr. Uribe's retirement from LAUSD in 1998, she became the Executive Director for Friends of Project 10, Inc. Gail Rolf
replaced Dr. Uribe's position as Education Director for Project 10, which continues today as part of the LAUSD.
The collection is open to researchers. There are no access restrictions.

This collection contains news clippings, correspondence, audiocassettes, publications, conference programs and ephemera that
document the establishment of and response to Project 10, 1986-2009. There is correspondence from parents with gay and lesbian
children in support of the program, as well as correspondence in opposition. News clippings profile founder Dr. Virginia Uribe
and demonstrate the controversial reception of Project 10. There are
Traditional Values Reports from the Traditional Values Coalition, which strongly opposed Project 10. There are also awards that Dr. Uribe and Gail Rolf
received for their dedicated work, as well as a Project 10 license plate, button and Models of Pride bag.
This collection is arranged alphabetically.
Thirteen T-shirts, GAR 1741-1753, were separated from the collection and catalogued in the garments collection.
