Description
The Karol J. Mysels papers comprise the personal and professional papers of Karol J. Mysels (1914-1998), former professor of chemistry at the University of Southern California. The collection also holds a relatively small amount of material created and collected by Estella Mysels (1921-2010), who was married to Karol from 1953 until his death in 1998. Karol Joseph Mysels was born on April 14, 1914, in Kraków, Poland, to Janina Johanna Henryka Henriette Rosenberg and Abraham Adolph Meisels. Karol published many works in the field of chemistry, including Introduction to Colloid Chemistry (1967), and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1965. Estella Ruth Maria Mysels, née Katzenellenbogen, was born in Berlin, Germany on January 12, 1921. After leaving Germany in 1938, Estella studied Chemistry at the University of California Berkeley, where she received her PhD. Estella was active with the League of Women Voters and a supporter of many charities. The bulk of the collection consists of Karol Mysels' research material and professional writings. The collection also includes photographs; correspondence, both personal and professional; audiovisual material; memorabilia; conference material; and official documents relating to identification and citizenship.
