Scope and content:

The Sidney Lens Photograph Collection consists mainly of photographs, and also includes one newspaper article as well as a letter from photographer Stefan Merken to Shirley Lens. Some of the photographs are taken by Sidney Lens. Other photographs depict Lens and his wife Shirley (nÊe Rubin).

Biographical / historical:

Sidney Lens was born in 1912 in New Jersey to Charles and Sophie Okun, Russian Jewish immigrants who came to the United States in 1907. His birth name was Sidney Okun. Lens married Shirley Ruben, a Chicago public school teacher, in 1946. Lens was an American labor leader, political activist, and author.
