Founded in 1972 as the Gay People's Union, the GLA formed to advocate and provide support for gay and lesbian students, faculty, and staff at the Stanford campus.

    Administrative History

Founded as the Gay People's Union (GPU) at Stanford in 1972, the organization formed to "provide a positive, supportive community in which gay and bisexual women and men [could] share their concerns in an atmosphere of pride, trust, and respect." Initially, there were separate men's and women's collectives each of which had weekly meetings. The organization later changed its name to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance at Stanford. As of 2014, the LGBT Community Resources Center at Stanford serves as the primary LGBT student group, and its services include mentoring, diversity awareness, speaker series, support groups, workshops, and cultural events.
