Background
Sallie Elizabeth (Howard) Ryan (1853-1948) was the wife of insurance agent and writer Lewis
Cass Ryan, and the mother of four sons: Edward, Hal, Lewis Carleton, and Russell Ryan; the
older three sons were all artists and illustrators. Sallie Ryan lived in Seattle, Washington
before moving to Los Angeles, California in 1919.
