    Abstract

The collection consists of performing artist and other celebrity portraits compiled from numerous donations during the first 60 years of the Archive of Recorded Sound (1958-2018). The majority of photographs in this collection were removed from the ARS Subject File Collection (ARS-0201). These include autographed images, publicity stills, postcards, lithographs, and reprints dating from the mid-nineteeth century through the 2000s. Notable examples within the collection include portraits from the Ravinia Festival's golden age of opera (1919-1931), 20th century conductors such as Arturo Toscanini and Pierre Monteux, and rare 19th century portraits of opera stars.
