Scope and Content of Collection
Land and Water contracts (1889-1890) consist of three disbound volumes of standard contracts between the San Luis Rey Water
Company and various landowners throughout San Diego County. These contracts establish the terms and conditions for the establishment
of waterworks infrastructure on the landowners’ properties. While some contracts exhibit minor modifications to the standard
terms, the fundamental agreement entails the construction of waterworks by the water company and the provision of necessary
rights of way by the landowners.
The contracts outline specific provisions, including rates and payment details for the services provided. Additionally, the
documents define criteria for measuring adequate progress in the waterworks construction process. Each contract specifies
an anticipated date of completion for the project. Materials are arranged by volume and chronologically by date of filing
within.
