Scope and Content of Collection
The Publications collection is a group of published material generated by the SFMA and SFMOMA from 1935 to the present, and
represents a cross-section of the types of materials used as invitations, announcements, brochures, gallery guides, calendars,
programs, and posters in addition to published monographs, periodicals, and exhibition catalogs.
The collection documents every public aspect of the museum’s activities, including exhibitions, fundraising, education, special
projects, anniversaries, and social events. The diversity of the publications reveals the breadth of the museum’s programming
and the changes in focus of the programs and design of the publications made by each of the museum’s directors.
The publications are topically divided into the types of publications, events or activities they represent, or based on the
organizing group. Records are arranged into six series: Example Publications, SFMA/SFMOMA Activities, Women’s Board and MAC,
Periodicals, Other Publications, and Exhibition Publications. The bulk of the collection is composed of exhibition materials.
