    Scope and Content of Collection

Certificates of Sale on Foreclosures and Executions document the participants and circumstances regarding the sale of real property due to foreclosure and have been divided into two series, Indexes to Certificates of Sale (1870- 1936) and Certificates of Sale on Foreclosures and Executions (1870-1936). Series 1, Indexes to Certificates of Sale, consists of two bound and disbound volumes. Information provided includes names of interested parties, i.e., plaintiff, defendant, and purchaser, the date of sale, and the book and page number where the sale was recorded. There is also an unlabeled column in which various, inconsistent information is recorded. These indexes are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the plaintiff. Series 2, Certificates of Sale on Foreclosures and Executions, consists of 16 bound and disbound volumes of certificates issued by a court-appointed Commissioner tasked with the sale of foreclosed real property. Certificates are written as narratives by the Commissioner enumerating the circumstances and details of the sales. Each document begins with a Superior Court of the County of San Diego header that includes a certificate number and the name(s) of buyer(s), named as the plaintiff, and the foreclosed upon owner, named as the defendant the defendant. The narrative includes those named above, the name of the Commissioner writing the certificate, date, dollar amount of total debt, date and location of the public auction, a legal description of the real property sold, and a declaration that the real property described is subject to redemption. Further information includes the date at time of recordation, the names of the Recorder and Deputy Recorder responsible for recordation, and the dollar amount of fees paid. Certificates are arranged chronologically by date of recording.
