Father Allan Deck, S.J., holds the Charles S. Casassa Chair of Catholic Social Values at Loyola Marymount University. His
Ph.D. is from St. Louis University and his
S.T.D. from the Pontifical Gregorian University. The author of many articles and two books, his work concentrates on, among
other things, Hispanic ministry and Roman Catholic social doctrine.
This collection contains fifteen letters, many from political personages, that Father Allan Deck, S.J. received in the late
1950s and early 1960s. The authors range from national poliitcal figures, eg, John F. Kennedy and Hubert H. Humphrey, to California
state politicians, eg, Governor Edmund G. Brown. Most of the letters were responding to Father Deck's contact with the politicians
regarding political issues, especially the run of John F. Kennedy for the presidency in 1960.
Some letters are personal; three touch on Father Deck's scholarship awards for college.
Other names of note in this series include Eleanor Roosevelt, James Roosevelt, Bishop James A. Pike, and Jessie Unruh.
The letters in this collection are stored in fifteen folders in one archival document box, which are arranged chronologically,
from the earliest date to the most recent.
