    Biographical / Historical

    Henry Austin Bruce, 1st Baron Aberdare, (1815-1895) was a barrister and politician. He was a Liberal member of Parliament for Merthyr Tydvil (1852 to 1868) and for Renfrewshire (1869 to 1873); Undersecretary (1862 to 1864) and Secretary of State for Home Affairs (1869 to 1873); admitted to the Privy Council in 1864 as Vice President of the Committee of Council on Education; a charity commissioner for England and Wales (1864); peer (1873) appointed by William Ewart Gladstone Lord President of the Council; the first president (1883 to 1895) and first chancellor (1895) of University College of South Wales; Fellow of the Royal Society (1876); member of the Royal Geographical Society (1876), and governor of the Royal Niger Company (1886).

    Scope and Contents

    A collection of letters addressed to Henry Austin Bruce, 1st Baron Aberdare. The letters include a wide variety of subjects, including women in medicine, Scottish commercial fishing, capital punishment, education, patronage in church and state, electioneering, English and Irish politics, the Royal Horticulture Society, the Royal Geographical Society, and the Sanitary Law Commission.
